Dede Brown
Biography
Danielle (Dede) Brown
(b.1984) Freeport, Grand Bahama, The Bahamas
Dede is an interdisciplinary artist who works in painting, photography, mixed media, sculpture and installation.
She has formally trained and worked in the fields of Interior Design and Photography, which greatly influence her fine art practice.
Inspiration is found in colour trends, graphic design, film & music, fashion, pop and drag culture, editorial and portrait photography, as well as the surrounding seascapes and tropical vegetation of her home in Eleuthera. From this union of elements emerges bold figurative and portrait works; layered in colour, pattern and textured details, charged by emotionally driven narratives. The themes of which are based on social stigmas surrounding gender roles, sexual and racial identity in The Bahamas and more broadly, throughout The Caribbean.
She currently lives and works from a home based studio, located on an overgrown, neglected seafront property, tucked away amongst the small community of Spanish Wells, on St. George’s Cay. Over the past year this space has sparked an even deeper curiosity of the home landscape and subsequently become a sanctuary for contemplation, creativity, healing and growth.
Her most recent works are an experimental blend of found objects from the shoreline and household items, fused with the techniques of screen printing and photo transfers on paper, wood and aluminum.
