Imogene Walkine
Biography
Ceramicist Imogene Walkine (born 1971, Nassau, The Bahamas), draws inspiration for her bold
creations from nature, describing her works as “extractions from nature”, imbued with the
energy of Bahamian Culture.
Her work is comprised of vividly colored Junkanoo masks, as well as very organic wall
sculptures, which seek to pay homage to the vibrant colors, dazzling textures and “mind-
boggling” patterns found in the natural Bahamian environment. Through her creations, she has
raised the functional platter and tiles to a new level, transforming the pieces into sculptural
forms.
Walkine received a Bachelor’s of Art and Art History with Honors, from Goldsmith’s College,
The University of London. She started as a painter and a teacher, but immediately found her
passion in clay, after taking a Ceramic’s class for the purpose of enhancing her students’
learning experience.
Imogene has participated in numerous exhibitions over the years, including solo shows at the
Pro Gallery, College of The Bahamas. The Ladder Gallery and the Cube West Gallery, and
numerous group exhibitions. She has also had some of her prominent works featured in group
exhibitions at the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas, including the all female artist show
SINGLESEX in 2013. In 2022, Walkine exhibited in a duo exhibition called Aquabotanica, at
CAB Gallery and Studio.
Her work can also be seen in public spaces, such as the mural “Bahama Land”, in the Lynden
Pindling International Airport. She has a large installation in the Goldwynn Resort entitled,
“Coral Reef” and most recently, she created 2 series of sculptural relief tiles, 2 Junkanoo relief
murals and many hanging sculptures for Disney’s Lookout Cay, on the island of Eleuthera.
